Hey Hey, Welcome! So you thought you'd check out my site. Delighted you did!! A new site, new blog and some new mixes. Believe it or not, it's facebook that's inspired me to try this again. It's pretty cool meeting up with friends I haven't seen in over 20 years. I
don't socialise a lot and sometimes feel stuck for words but I still think about my old friends a lot. This is my way of saying Hi! :-)
So these mixes are dedicated to ALL my Family and Friends on Facebook. To All the Stockers all over the world, and of course, most of all, my new Family - Lisa, Carrie, Doe and Rob.
Oh let's not forget Sausage and Bacon, Ziggy and Bernard!!!!
And so, the music...
This week I've tried to pull out what most represents what I do, very eclectic but mixed in my own particular style (I hope). There's two sexy rock tunes - ACDC's Night Prowler and David Holmes Shadow Mann, with the classic line "I'm the cat your mother warned you about!" Plenty of lounge, both the classic and the modern, especially two from Skeewiff. I also have two cuts from my all time favourite remix project, modern beat treatments of Pierre Henry's Psyche Rock from the very tough Messe Pour Le Temp Presents . Apparently Pierre Henry did not approve of this project at all at all but I did. In fact, this was the stuff that tuned me into electronica in the first place.
I have Aiden Brady to thank for that. I wasn't really digging the whole dance music outside of a very narrow context - the party!! Aidan and Gedge were running a lot of gigs and I loved what they were doing, but outside of that the music was of little interest to me. Despite the fact that I have been involved in computers since I was 11, I was not interested in computer music at all. I was still a Rock n' Roll kinda guy. Then Aidan lent my the Psyche Rock ep. It was the same highly produced computerised electronic technology kinda thing that Gedge and Aiden played at gigs but it had familiar chords - ROCK N'ROLL chords... Any one that listened to the mix will recognise it as the theme to Futurama. But this was long before that.
That was it, I was hooked. Fatboy Slim and Cold Cut opened a complete new soundscape of broken beats, rock n roll, and clever sampling. It's fitting that these tunes go on the first of a set of mixes. (The Futurama sound is far less distorted than the mix you will hear, but I must get my hands on a copy of it. )
GirlTalk is pretty mandatory since a lot of our work is similar. A few years ago I entered a competition with a title called "Copyright This" featuring about 50 pop tunes in under two minutes. I think I came 12th out of about 50-60 entries, which was pretty good considering a few were downright annoyed at my interpretation of the rules. A few musicians insist that I call myself DJ and that somehow sampling is a lower form of creative endeavour. I may go into this in more depth in the future...
Lastly, I finish off with a really cheesy Breaks tune by DJ rap coz I like it. No doubt you will notice the mixes are wrapped around an exceptional piece of vinyl by Richard Harris. I'll edit this post later when I've done a bit more research on it. You'll be coming across more of him from me over the coming months, should you be so inclined. A truly extraordinary album.
If you like, feel free to comment. I might even take requests!!!!!
