This is my synths setup for the weekly meetup at Galway Social Spaces. The idea is to keep it minimum and use this as an oportunity to really dig deep. I'm using a low spec'd but extremely portable toshiba laptop. This runs Ableton Live. Live will then drive the Novation Bassstation and one VST that I build using synthedit or similar. The audio from the Basstation will be sent through Ableton for delays and distotion. And thats pretty much it. |

My korg polysix finally arrived yesterday!!!
Oblong26 the ebay seller packed the vintage synth in bubble wrap and brown paper, no cardboard box. This guy is an absolute disaster. Of course it's partly my fault. I should have done more research on him. He has a zero positive rating for sales, seems I was not the only person infuriated by his total lack of professionalism. 11 days it took for him just to confirm the P&P. Needless to say the synth is NOT in near mint condition as he had advertised. Even a superficial glance shows damage 1) one of the side panels, fixed with sellotape!!!!! 2) The tape to tape/ bank A light remains on regardless of funtion chosen. 3) The volume knob is scratchy and needs replacing 4) But worst of all one of the six voices doesn't work!!!!!!! What a sham. It will take me a few weeks before I dare take a soldering iron to this beast. He also discussed midi sounds available on the net. THIS KORG IS NOT FITTED WITH A MIDI RETROFIT!!! What was he thinking!!!! A vintage synth in a brown paper bag, the fucking nerve!!!! |

Say hello to my new USB mixer. :) With four mono inputs and two stereo, it is perfect for my few outboard synths and samplers, which I've hooked up. Speaking of which, I've also bought a Roland Juno 106on Ebay.
I've been playing with the usb mixer the past day or two, but won't be using it in my dj set at the Galway Earth festival because of the potential for surprises. I lilke the effects but they don't work on computer out only the instruments plugged into the mixer, but thats ok. |

I'll be Sandymanns DJ for the evening and we'll be doing a few recording sessions after the Galway Earth Festival is over. Pretty unique experience for me working with rappers. I also did a mini mashup of Nicola williams Volcano and Valiums I want my shiopping trolley, but you don't get to hear it less you is at the festival. So what you waiting fo? |

Funky Breaks Set @ Galway Earth Festival August 4th
Tickets 10 euro Yep, my first gig in over two years. First using my new setup new approaches, even a new venue :) Funny tho its with an old crown, I know some of the the organisers from 10 plus years back. Considering my blog posts elsewhere about the impending oil peak apocalypse, it's pretty cool to be stepping out at an eco-fest. I will be acting as continuity DJ playing smaller sets in bewteen the live acts and DJ Will Softly of Function One soundsystem and OneWorldSounds.com will be topping of the night. Will runs a PA system here in Galway and I met him the other day and he is a fine bloke. I expect we will get up to a few more collaborations over the coming months, so If you live in Galway keep an eye out.. He listened to a few of the tracks I've written and even suggested dropping them in his own sets. Thats got to be the ultimate complement , and from a pro DJ like Will... I was delighted. |

Controllerism is to laptops what turntableism is to Decks. I love this concept. And just as many DJ's were informed by turntablists even if they diddn't necessarily use ALL the techniiques, I too have found this form inspirational and picked up a few pointers that I intend to experiment with. What I was buzzed by was how similar his Ableton session layout is similar to mine. We both reserve the first two channels for complete tunes whiles the remaining contain prechosen loops and fx channels. I've ordered a cool little Alesis 8 chanel usb mixer, which I'm hoping will arrive in time for some testing before the Galway Earth Festival, failling that i'll stick with my M-audio Black box. I've been using the evolution x session mixer controller for a month or so and am quite used to it, so I reckon i'll be using it at the Galway Fest. I'd like to get another controller, not as complex as the video below. But I'd certainly like to encompass some of his techniques. Anyways..... Meet Muldover |

In spite of all the smart, multifunctional and state-of-the-art controllers that are commercially available today, there has always been demand for custom physical interfaces and specialized controllers. That's why we have developed a modular prototyping platform. The prototyping modules are aimed at researchers, artists, musicians, circuitbenders and performers who want to use high quality controls without spending too much time on manufacturing or trying to find a suitable enclosure.
Machinecollective understands your needs and we're here to help you out! We are working on a range of modules based on frequently used components, sensors and indicators. The prototyping modules are designed to work with development platforms such as Arduino and Wiring. The modules can also be used for other purposes such as circuitbending, DIY synths, analog sequencers or plain old electronics projects. |

Radio: I've tidied up the news section a bit and added thickbox functionality to allow for more control over content layout with infringing on the minute console size. Meanwhile I've down a huge amount of tagging so hopefully the request pages are getting that little bit easier. And I've added my updated Chaos Theory dub plates. These will be used as source for gig and radio mixing but you can also request them and hear them in their raw form. They will be constantly tweaked to perfecting so there will always be something new. Ive also added a huge library of midi loops to my Ableton setup, routed both to VSTs and my outboard gear. I'm still tweaking the control setup, making presets, cabling and such like. But the time spent mixing live without stopping to fix something is getting longer and more enjoyable. Now that all the main prep work is done, both thge organinsing of sets, samples and loops, and the actual physical setup, I'm hoping to collab with a few local galway DJ's musicains, drummers and Rappers. Galway is Full of em :). I just need a better mixer to plug a set of decks into. |

RADIO: The radio set is progressing, slowly, but progressing nonetheless. Unlike the Mobile set, the radio set involves much more long term experimenting using anything that I come across. This stuff can then be recorded and used as loops etc. I've spent a few days travelling around galway city with a small tape recorder, Shop street is especially cool for finding sounds. I'm hoping touse these samples on a small homemade 8 bit sampler that I'm currently designing and building. My main focus is experimenting with synth both virtual and real. |

That was then, now things have changed. The biggest change for me has been the upgrade to Ableton Live 7. Although this new feature was actually introduced in version 6. I simply couldn't afford the upgrade 'til now. This new feature is the ability to load a set while another set is playing. This negates the need for a second laptop and means that the entire gig need not be as predefined as before. I have about 100 minisets writen at this stage and any one of them can be called at any moment. Once a sample from the new set is activated the set will auto adjust to its bpm If I so wish. |

Mobile: Now obviously the first few stages involve getting to know your weapons of choice and actually writing your toons. I'm not going to bother writing about that. There are plenty of sources out there on the net should you need to brush up on your music theory or get bogged down in discussions on mastering techniques. But I would like to share two things which would get me shot by any pro's out there, aassuming of course they had a gun and I was standing in their line of sight. Firstly as a beginner I recommend you choose one or two bpms and stick with them. I chose 100 and 120 originally. Now after 5-6 years of decent success I've expanded to included 80,90,110,115 and 130. Why? As a beginner how do you intend to mix your 117 bpm tune with your 120 bpm one. It is very very fulfilling to write 3 or 4 110 bpm tunes then hear them mixed into one seamless set. Only then do you get a decent grasp of what your tunes sound like in their proper context. |

As a music producer I make a decent programmer, as a programmer I make a decent music producer, hence the name DJ Techbot. What follows is the second of my (hopefully) weekly blogs documenting my progress as I try to move from a jack of all trades to an actual skilled Techie. I've been making music for about 10 years. The first 3-4 years yeilded little or no results, until I discovered Acid, the loop sequencer that promised ti change the way you think about music creation. Well it did. I have two main goals Mobile : Create a series of live sets that could be played in a bar or club in Galway, using minimum equipment ensuring ultimate mobility. Radio: Create a more experimental system for live studio internet radio broadcasts. |

1)I understand music theory, Can play a few chords and riffs. But I can't play along to a sequencer, so I tend to get the best loop I played and just repeat it. I spend a lot of time trying to recreate the sound of a loop (say from CM or FM) so that I can add variations where necessary. The original loop will have all the complicated groovy bits, mine will just augment whats there. 2)The drums and bass obviously hold the tunes together and here I usually use Skip to my loops by FBS and the Bass Legends Sample CDs. Other bass loops are sometimes put through an amp plugin to give them the TB sound. 3)I use Cooledit to cut up the loops and Acid to timestretch them. All old versions ( I've been unemployed the past year and and probably unemployable at this stage). I use cue points so I can recut the loop if necessary. I don't use Acid to sequence just timestretch. 4) I always write several tunes at the same bpm at once to give a more consistant mix, since I couldn't mix or master a tune to save my life. All sequencing is done in cubase. Each tune is rendered at the end of each session and brought directly into the cubase mix file. That is then rendered. I then listen to it over a period of WEEKS maybe months before I am happy that there are relatively consistant levels. 5) As for my source material ie vocals and such. This is the raison d'etre of my music. My favourite source is newsgroups. You can get entire radio shows from the 40's -50's right up to the Art Bell stuff. ( I have spent about two years downloading radio shows on a weekly basis)even before I got broadband. I also use audio books and TV adverts. |

I haven't bought a copy of Computer Music in a log time and was surprised to see the list of software in the CM studio. And since I'd been playing with the idea of adding my midi loops , this is a good time to check em out. I expect I'll be using a simpler setup for the Galway Earth Festival, I originaly wanted to use Circle by Galway boyz Future Audio Workshop, but there is not enough time to master this cool synth in time for the gig. And since I'm familair with several of the CM studio plugins already, I'll stick with them. 01 CM-101 02 SR-202 V 1.1 03 DS-404 1.1 04 CM-505 05 OHMYGOD! 1.01 06 CM-303 PC 07 PSPCM Springverb 08 CM Vocoder 11 CMFuzz 12 CM WusikStation 13 FabFilter One CM Edition 14 Energy Pro PC 15 Paax2 CM 16 PulseModulator PC 17 Vascillator 18 CM WaveShaper 19 Paax 3 CM 20 AlphaCM 21 Dominator 22 Zebra CM 23 Nebula3 CM 24 Unknown 64 CM 25 CMorg 26 Guitar Suite CM 27 Bass Rack CM 28 Scanned Synth CM 29 Astralis CM 30 CompressiveCM 31 Electri-Q CM I'm gonna start with Zebra CM and then Dominator. I already use WusikStation and love it. In fact I'm seriously considering upgrading. |

1. Set processor scheduling to background services rather than programs. Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced Tab > Background Services This is a very important tip and could make a significant difference to how low you can set your samples per buffer for your soundcard. A lower samples per buffer setting means lower latency, which is better for vsti's and ASIO monitoring (if you use it). Processor scheduling should be set to background services and not Programs. This has the effect of switching from more frequent and smaller CPU time slices (applications), to less frequent and longer CPU time slices (background services). This allows the audio application or driver to "hang on" to the CPU for longer without interruption. In addition, the background services setting also reduces the amount of "priority boost" that foreground window's threads receive. Start > Settings > Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance Settings > Advanced Tab > Background Services Further reading - http://service.steinberg.net/knowled...uling_win2k_xp |

FROM KVR discoDSP has announced that the source code for its VST freezer /resampler plug-in, HighLife , has been released under a BSD license and that HighLife is now a SourceForge project. HighLife is a VSTi freezer and Sampler. It loads into your VST Host as a VSTi but it also allows you to load another VSTi into it and then "Freeze" the current preset and save this as its own preset. You can then unload the hosted VSTi to free up resources. |
